When it comes to Easter, Maundy Thursday has its importance. Maundy Thursday is also called Holy Thursday, Covenant Thursday and Thursday of Mysteries. This day is celebrated before the Easter starts which make it more special. Maundy Easter has its own story as during this day Jesus had his last meal with the Apostles.
Even it’s also called the Food washing day which means Maundy. Maundy Thursday is considered as the 5th day of the Easter season which comes between Holy Wednesday and Good Friday. According to the calendar of 2019 Maundy Easter is going to be celebrated on April 18, 2019. The dates can be fall between the two schedules followed by Christians whether it’s Gregorian calendar or Julian calendar.
Maundy Thursday shows the period of Easter Triduum which is the mixture of three things including passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Mostly Christians celebrates this day with other holy days including Good Friday and Holy Saturday.
Easter Thursday as Maundy Thursday
It’s really weird to call Easter Thursday as Maundy Thursday, but according to old history, Maundy means Footwashing which occurs during the Thursday when Christians get this services by washing their feet. During this service they speak words by Jesus saying:
“I order you to follow me, I have loved you, so loved each other too.”
This day is the combination of three holy days which includes Maundy Easter, Good Fridayand Holy Saturday. It’s a ritual to follow all these days in its way as these days are celebrated in the remembrance of Jesus Christ. The day being with the Maundy Thursday and ends with the Easter Sunday.
Many of you haven’t heard about this day but according to scholars during 1955 this day is declared the most important day for Christians Community as it begins in mid of Thursday and ends on Sunday. Maundy Thursdaystarts with the celebration of Lord’s Supper and Easter Vigil.
Last Meal of Jesus
According to the Bible Verses, “The day has come when Passover lamb is going to be sacrificed. Jesus sent Peter and his friend John saying, “Go and get the lamb and prepare for us so we can have the Passover.”
Maundy Thursdaywasthe day when Jesus had the last meal with his friends. This meal is also called “The Last Supper.” The meal was followed by the Jewish Passover where the roast lamp was given while red wine was also delivered to him which shows a special message in the Christian community as they believe that during this day red win means that Jesus followers will be set free from their sins.
Jesus wasted his feet before he was going too killed. After the meal, Jesus went to a garden “Gethsemane” where he performed prayer. In the Thursday evening, Jesus was then betrayed by Judas and was arrested for the trial.
In many countries, Maundy Thursdayis celebrated in different ways, like in U.K. Queens are given special coins as Maundy Money instead of washing feet’s. Also, some Catholics ladies were black dress as they think it’s a day of sorrow and sadness.
Even some people in different part of the world try to sit the way Jesus and his friend did. People think that this way they would be set free from the sin during the death day. The Thursday meal starts with the mater of the house like Jesus started the meal during his capture. The young ones hold the cups and ask about the Passover day it’s when Jesus story is told to the whole family. Everyone washes their hands and eat the “Sop” after that meal ends with the red wine.
